Meet Karen Liot Hill, whose life reflects a uniquely American journey with a French twist. Born in Brittany to an American mother and French father, she grew up on Long Island before finding her calling in New Hampshire, where she now serves on the state’s Executive Council.
As the oldest of six in a blended family, Karen faced profound challenges—losing her mother at six, surviving domestic violence, and raising a child while excelling at Dartmouth. Yet her optimism endured. She fell in love with New Hampshire and has spent two decades in public service, including twenty years on Lebanon City Council and now on the five-member Executive Council. Using the acronym CARS—Contracts, Appointments, Roads, Services—she explains how this unique body balances the governor’s power and manages everything from million-dollar contracts to mailbox repairs.
Beyond politics, Karen shares her love of music, sailing, and her eight years as a restaurant owner. Guided by “work hard, play hard” and “both/and” philosophies, she shows how resilience and joy can go hand in hand.
Whether you’re curious about New Hampshire’s government or simply drawn to inspiring life stories, this conversation brims with wisdom, warmth, and authenticity.
